Spiritual books are those books that inspire us spiritually. They help us to grow spiritually and maintain the knowledge we have received in Christ. Spiritual books contain records and information that has to do spiritual events that took place in the past. Also, spiritual books draw out doctrine from the events and accounts in the Holy Scripture. The Holy Scripture is the mother of all scriptural/spiritual books. Every spiritual book establishes its foundation from the Holy Scripture.
All spiritual books must contain teachings, lessons and concepts drawn from the Holy Scripture. Therefore, the Holy Scripture forms the bases for all spiritual books. This shows that any spiritual book that doesn’t have its foundation rooted in the Holy Scripture should not be seen as a spiritual book. The benefits of reading the Holy Scripture and scriptural based books are enormous to talk about.
However, evidences from the Scripture have shown that people in the Old Testament developed reading culture that helped them maintain their spiritual life. Also, in the New Testament we found out that Jesus made reading His culture. Therefore, reading should be a culture every believer in Christ should imbibe. For instance, it is interesting to know that someone like Daniel made reading a culture and that was why he was able to understand the timing of the fulfillment of the prophecy stated about Israel. Let’s see what he said in the quotation below.
“In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of the years, whereof the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet, that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem.”
Spiritual Books Opens Revelations:
The truth is that if Prophet Daniel didn’t develop reading culture, there’s no way he would have understood the timing of the prophecy of prophet Jeremiah. The resultant effect could be that the children of Israel could have stayed many years in captivity than they ought. However, as Daniel read from the book of prophet Jeremiah he was fully informed about the situation and then he took action. The consequence of his action was the liberation of the children of Israel from captivity. Again, in the days of Nehemiah, they people also gathered and read from the book of the Law of Moses. And by that they were able to understand what was written in the law concerning them. Let’s see that in the book of Nehemiah
“So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading. And Nehemiah, which is the Tirshatha, and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the Levites that taught the people, said unto all the people, This day is holy unto the LORD your God; mourn not, nor weep. For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the law. Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”
Spiritual Books Unfolds Restoration:
The result of reading from the book of the law was a restoration of joy among the people. And also their hope was rekindled. If they had not read the book of the law their lives will continue to be in shamble. Also we have a situation where King Josiah ordered for the reading of the book of the law. Let’s see what happened there below.
“And Hilkiah the high priest said unto Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the LORD. And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, and he read it. Also Shaphan the scribe came to the king, and brought the king word again, and said, Thy servants have gathered the money that was found in the house, and have delivered it into the hand of them that do the work, that have the oversight of the house of the LORD. And Shaphan the scribe shewed the king, saying, Hilkiah the priest hath delivered me a book. Shaphan read it before the king. And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the book of the law, that he rent his clothes.”
2 Kings 22:8-11
Here also the reading of the book of the law helped them to understand the missing link in their lives. The king went as far as renting his clothes. This is because the revelation of the content of the law was made possible after they have read it. Reading spiritual books therefore, becomes a way of imbuing knowledge in the life people. The purpose of acquiring knowledge from the spiritual books is etched in the understanding of God.
The Incarnate Jesus Made Reading His Custom:
Therefore, every book that is tagged spiritual must contain revelations about God and the things of God. If a book that is tagged spiritual doesn’t have information that enhances the knowledge of God such book isn’t spiritual. This is because we have seen from the illustrations above that whenever the book of the law was read, the knowledge of God was made available.
The events from the Old Testament have shown us that reading spiritual book was a culture they developed. And it really helped them to understand God better. In the same vein, in the New Testament, the incarnate Jesus studied and read the Scripture. He made it a custom to read the scripture and understood it properly. Let’s see one of the verses that spoke about this below.
“And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.”
It was by studying and reading the scripture that the incarnate Jesus was able to understand the prophecies that were spoken about Him.
The Verses Below Explain Better:
“And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised. To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, then sat down. The eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. And he began to say unto them. This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.”
“Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken. Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.”
Apostle Paul speaking to the Ephesians said to them thus;
“How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words. Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ).”
Every Believer Should Make Reading A Custom:
This is placing emphasis on the need for believers to study and read spiritual books. Apostle Paul said that it is when they read they will understand his knowledge in the mystery of Christ. This shows that understanding is established when we read. And for this reason he encouraged his son in Christ Pastor Timothy thus;
“Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.”
In the same vein Christians or believers are admonished to give attendance to reading. This is because it is only when they have read they will understand whatever that is said about them in Christ. Therefore, if a believer is facing situation(s) he should pick up spiritual books and read. The tendency is there that answers will come from such books.
