What Is The Law Of Sin And Death? – Pastor Chukwuemeka Charles Asiegbu

Law of Sin and Death:

The Law Of Sin And DeathhLaw of sin and death is one of the terms Apostle Paul used in one of his epistles. While Apostle was describing the nature of freedom he has obtained in Christ, he mentioned that he has been freed from the law or sin and death. He also mentioned that the freedom emanated from the law of the Spirit of life. This implies that the law of sin and death held him in bondage before the law of the spirit of life came in to free him. His statement is quoted below.

“For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.”

Romans 8:2

However, before we go ahead to explain the verse above, we should firstly look at what the previous verse said. And it says thus;

“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”

Roman 8:1

Law Of Sin And Death In View:

Building the right understanding of what the above verse said will help to explain in detail what Romans 8:2 meant. In the above verse Apostle Paul said that “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus.” This is how it was stated in the original manuscript. Nevertheless, it shows that, there was condemnation but those which are in Christ Jesus are not condemned. For there to be a condemnation it means that there was offense committed against a stipulated rule or order. Which means the result of such crime is condemnation or death. Death is the outcome of condemnation. Hence Apostle Paul declared that because he has found himself in Christ Jesus he faced no condemnation or death. Not just only him but all who are in Christ cannot be condemned.

The implication here is that condemnation is the product of the law of sin and death. Furthermore, let’s begin to look at another statement Apostle Paul made in his epistle to the people Corinth.

“Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.”

2 Corinthians 3:6

Again for better clarity we should as a matter of fact backpedal to the previous verses in this chapter.

“Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart. And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward.”

2 Corinthians 3:3-4

The Epistle Of Christ:

The statements to look at in these verses are, “Be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink.” Also, “But with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.” So, there is epistle called epistle of Christ and it was/is ministered by believers (us). This epistle is the product of the living God, not written in tables of stone. Apostle Paul was trying to differentiate between two write ups, one was not written by ink and the other was written by ink on a table of stone. The former was written on fleshy table of the heart.

Now let’s proceed in the explanation of the aforementioned verse which is;

Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.”

2 Corinthians 3:6

In the previous verse he said that we minister the epistle of Christ, and he called it the New Testament. And of course the New Testament is written by the Spirit of the living God as a result it gives life. However, the letter is written on the tables of stone and it kills. Remember, the word Testament means law. In this case we can go back to the subject matter which is in Romans 8:2.

“For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.”

Romans 8:2

Enhancing the Understanding of Law of Sin and Death:

We can interpolate the verse above to look like this in order to create the appropriate meaning and interpretation of the above verse.

 “For the Testament of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the Testament of sin and death.”

So the believers in Christ are meant to preach or minister the testament of the Spirit of life because that is the source of life and liberty to man. Again, Apostle Paul speaking to the believers in Corinth made this statement below.

“But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.”

1 Corinthians 6:17

“Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”

2 Corinthians 3:17

No Condemnation to a Believer:

The Spirit of God dwells in the believer as a result, there’s no way a believer can be under condemnation because God cannot be condemned. Hallelujah! They believers should not minister the letter which is the testament of sin and death because it kills. However, if the New Testament is referred as the testament of Christ and it gives life, the testament written on the tables of stone should be the Old Testament. It implies that the content of the Old Testament if properly verified contains death. That is why it has the ability to kill.

In order to ascertain the authenticity of the statement above let’s look what Jesus said while He was addressing his audience below.

“For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.”

John 6:33

Apostle Paul speaking to the Romans justified the statement Jesus made above as stated below.

“And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.”

Romans 8:10

The Spirit is life!

The Grace Of God Confirmed:

Again, Apostle Paul while making comments about the Old Testament as he wrote to the Romans declared thus;

“For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.”

Romans 5:13-14

So there was sin in the world but sin wasn’t accounted or imputed until the law came into existence. This means that the law makes sin to be recognized and hence death reign through sin (the sin of Adam). In the same chapter verse 17 Apostle Paul declared that;

“For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.”

Romans 5:17

The solution proffered by Jesus’ death, the power of sin and death over man was broken, and man is freed from the grip of the law of sin and death. This is the demonstration of the grace of God in the world. Apostle Paul addressing his audience in the book of acts stated that;

“Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins. And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.”

Acts 13:38-39

In Conclusion:

Therefore, the outcome of preaching or ministering Jesus Christ to people has always been life, not just life but eternal life. And as many who have received this message has received life in their spirits. This is because in the message of Christ, there is no condemnation and that is why Apostle Paul could have the temerity to say that they are not condemned.  The message the Apostles received which is the message by the spirit of the living God produced salvation. It has freed people from the law of sin and death.
