Growing In Grace:
Growing in grace is an ongoing thing or a continuous process in the life of a believer in Christ. The term growing in grace means to have increase in the direction of God’s grace. God’s grace is that gesture or nature of God that allows Him to grant man what he didn’t work or paid for. The grace of God is that pedestal man stands on and salvation is given to him. The salvation of God via the finished work is obtainable by the grace of God. Apostle Paul writing to his audience in Ephesus said to them.
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
Therefore, the grace of God can be seen as that oddity of God which favours the ungodly even in his ungodly nature. The scripture says in the book of Genesis that;
“But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.”
Moses in the book of Exodus asked for the grace of God.
“Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, shew me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight: and consider that this nation is thy people.”
Growing In Grace Is Mandatory:
The grace of God is something a believer in Christ cannot do without. In fact his life revolves around the grace of God. Since he is saved by the grace of God, his heart should be established in God by grace. What strengthens a believer in Christ isn’t the food he eats or wealth he has but the grace of God.
“Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein.”
However, it’s one thing to be established in something, it’s another thing to grow in that which one is established. This implies that though a believer is established in grace, he should as well grow in grace. This will lead us to look at how we can grow in grace. Apostle Peter in his second epistle said;
“But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.”
2 Peter 3:18
In the above verse it says “but grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord….” The word and in the…. Can be interpolated to be which is in the knowledge of our Lord. So we can rightly state that to grow in grace means to grow in the knowledge of our Lord. In the previous chapter, Apostle Peter puts it this way;
“Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,”
2 Peter 1:2
Grace And Peace Multiplies:
Interestingly, Apostle Peter says that grace and peace will multiple through the knowledge of God. The knowledge of God becomes the source through which grace and peace multiplies in a believer in Christ. Emphatically, increase in grace comes through the knowledge of God. Outside the knowledge of God grace will be stagnated in the life of a believer. The question therefore is what is the source of the knowledge of God? Before we answer this question, let us take a look at what the scripture says below.
“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
The above verse says that faith is by hearing the message of Christ the original rendering stipulated. It implies that faith is a product of message of Christ. In the message of Christ, the knowledge of God is made known or revealed. They hearer, believes and he is saved by the grace of God. Therefore, the grace of God is manifested once the hearer accepts the message of Christ. Surely, the message of Christ is the container of the knowledge of God. The implication is that growth in grace is possible inasmuch as the hearer continues to hear the message of Christ. Remember, the grace and peace will multiply through the knowledge of God. So the sharing of the knowledge of God makes it easy for the multiplication of grace and peace in the life of a believer. The more a believer in Christ hears the word of God which contains the knowledge of God; the resultant effect is the multiplication of grace and peace.
The Word Of God Is The Container Of Grace:
In the presence of God’s word, grace abounds and multiplies. For this reason a believer in Christ should not avoid to hear the word of God because by the word of God, he will grow in grace. It is important for a believer to pray for more grace of God while the message of God is shared. By listening to the word of God, a believer will find himself abounding in grace.
“Therefore, as ye abound in every thing, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also. And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work.”
2 Corinthians 8:7-8
Also by listening to the word of God always, a believer is enabled to work in great grace in his ministry in Christ.
“And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.”
The grace that saved a believer in Christ is one and common, it is not uncommon. The above verses are not categorizing grace but showing its level of manifestation in the life of them that believe and hear the word of God always. The believer has been established in the grace of God, but through constant hearing of the word of God he grows in the grace of God.
