Rahab’s Faith Factor:
Rahab’s faith factor – Interestingly, a surprising name appears in the list of these elders and her name is Rahab. It is interesting because her profession was attached to her name which reads like this;
“By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace.”
It is not just the book of Hebrews in the New Testament that mentioned this special character. Apostle James in his epistle wrote about her and as well mentioned her name with her profession.
“Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?”
Worthy to note is that her profession is not the decent type and should for no reason by religiously human reasoning be attached to her name but this goes a long way to let us know what God is after in a man. For us to grasp in totality the message and why she was mentioned irrespective of her profession we have to go to the original text in the book of Joshua and find out what she did.
Rahab’s Faith In Action:
Firstly, let’s see her confession about God.
“And she said unto the men, I know that the LORD hath given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you. For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom ye utterly destroyed. And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.”
This woman wasn’t an Israelite and never had a firsthand experience of the miracles of God. Just by mere hearing of the things that God did without seeing it she believed God. She believed in His power and supremacy over any other god and king. This is faith in action because it will only take faith to believe what you have not seen. I want to state that her confession of faith marked the beginning of the fall of the wall of Jericho.
Rahab Believed In God’s Salvation Power:
This implies that all the actions Rehab took were taken based on her believe in the salvation/liberation of God. Rahab’s faith delivered herself and her family from destruction when the children of Israel invaded their land. So she lied about the spies in order to save them from the king of her land. She didn’t stop there she went ahead to helped them escaped. The question is this what would have happened if she didn’t protect them? Well they would have been killed and their mission terminated. And such would have caused much devastation in the life of the children of Israel. Yet there is one more thing to take note of. And that is the fact that she followed the instruction which the spies gave to her without doubt. Let’s see her action below.
“And she said, According unto your words, so be it. And she sent them away, and they departed: and she bound the scarlet line in the window.”
For her having the faith that if she puts the Red (scarlet) cloth on her window she and her family will be saved means that she believed in the blood of salvation which is the blood of Christ, because the Red cloth is a typology of the blood of Christ.
Rahab Earned A Place In Christ:
Rahab’s faithful actions gave her a place in Christ. The lineage of Christ will not be complete if the name Rehab is not there. Though she was a harlot, her faith took her above her profession. This is because without faith in what God would do no one can please God!
