Forgiveness In Christ:
Forgiveness in Christ is only obtainable in Christ. There is no forgiveness outside Christ. The purpose of Christ going to the cross as orchestrated by God is to bring forgiveness to man. Whatever man has to receive from God has been rooted and established in the death of Christ. The death of Christ becomes a necessity for man because if Christ didn’t die man becomes a hopeless being. It’s apt to say that any man without Christ is living a hopeless life irrespective of his possession in life.
The means of receiving forgiveness of sin is through believing in the finished work of Christ. The finished work of Christ is encapsulated in His death burial and resurrection. So anyone that has believed that Christ died and was buried and on the third day He resurrected is saved from sin. It means his or her sins have been forgiven.
The promise of forgiveness of man’s sin wasn’t a thing of the New Testament but was established in the beginning. The beginning here is Genesis. The people in the beginning had to believe in Christ on a promissory note. God spoke to them about Christ in symbols and divers manners. Let’s see how the book of Hebrews puts it.
“God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,”
See what Apostle Paul has to say below in regards to this;
And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.
Forgiveness In Christ God Preached To Abraham:
How did God preach to Abraham? The book Hebrews 1:1 answers that. It is stated it was in divers manners. The outcome of God’s preaching to Abraham was that Abraham believed God. The act of believing God brought and established God’s righteousness on Abraham.
“For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.”
What did Abraham believe from God? Nothing but the gospel God preached to him. The gospel God preached to Abraham was Christ. Notice that the gospel of Christ was and is nothing but the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. Let’s see what transpired between God and Abraham below.
“And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me. Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son. And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.”
Through Revealed Knowledge Abraham Believed In Christ:
In incident above the demonstration of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ was made manifest. Through this demonstration God made Abraham to believe in the gospel of Christ He preached to him. God preached of the coming of Christ to Abraham and he believed God. Then it was accounted unto him for righteousness. That he was declared righteous means that his sins are forgiven him. So Abraham and the rest of the Old Testament saints believed in Christ by faith on a promissory note. See the book of Hebrews chapter 11.
Note, they believed and were expecting Christ in their days but they all died without seeing Him. Jesus made this known where He declared thus to His Jewish audience.
“Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.”
God in His preaching to Abraham showed Christ to him by revelation and he saw Christ and rejoiced. The joy in his heart was the joy of his resurrection which is a product of Christ’s resurrection. However, notice as I said earlier, all promises of God are sealed up in Christ. These promises are confirmed and established in Christ as true.
“For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.”
2 Corinthians 1:20
This implies that the forgiveness of man’s sin in Christ is guaranteed. Therefore, in Christ, God is not making a conjectural statement but assured statements. Good Friday is the beginning of the fulfillment of God’s promises to man.
Forgiveness Of Sin Not Futuristic Event:
This is the will of God for Christ and Christ has to accomplish it in order for man to obtain forgiveness of sin. So forgiveness of sin is one of those of things that have been given and fulfilled in Christ. The implication here is that God has given man forgiveness already in Christ. Therefore, forgiveness of sin is not going to be a futuristic event but something that has taken place in Christ. Sins are forgiven not because someone asks for it but because it has been established and fulfilled in Christ. The only way to obtain forgiveness of sin is to be in Christ.
The Apostles in their days affirmed this very fact to their listeners. Let see the verses below.
“Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.”
What Apostle Peter preached above is being confirmed by Apostle Paul below.
“Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins.”
Apostle Paul continued in affirming the same thing to his audience in Ephesus as stated below.
“In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace.”
Also see Colossians 1:14.
The death of Jesus Christ on the cross availed man the opportunity to receive forgiveness of sin in Him. Apostle Paul puts it better thus;
“And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.”
