Old Testament Weakness:
Old Testament weakness – The animal blood sacrifice conducted in the Old Testament makes the Testament to lack the potency to proffer lasting solution to man’s common problem. That is why anyone under that covenant obtains a temporary solution which is why it is renewable yearly. So under the Old Testament the problem is not taken away but could be maintained or controlled. The Old Testament, therefore, becomes a means to get along with God. Therefore, it could not be the end to God because it lacks the capacity. The Old Testament could be defined as the Testament of promises and not a Testament of fulfillment. This is why, all the visions and practices in the Old Testament were pointing to the promises. These promises will be fulfilled in a Man Christ See Galatians 3:16, Hebrews 8:6.
The temporary nature of the Old Testament was explicit in the form of its writing. It was written on stone, which however, reflects the level of carnality in it. This shows that its origin is not emanating from eternity and of course cannot solve a problem that is eternal. Therefore, nobody was qualified to obtain eternal life by it because it lacks the capacity to do so. See Galatians 2:16. The only thing obtainable by this covenant is the awareness of sin and to condemn or make all men guilty. Also see Romans 3:19, 7:7 – 10. The Old Testament was very active in ministering death and not life. As a result, it’s seen as a covenant of death because it ministers death.
Old Testament A School Master:
Though it served as a school master till the time perfection came. At the due time, God set it aside and annulled it, in order to put in place that which is perfect and permanent. See Jeremiah 31:31 – 33. Notice that this covenant will not be written on stone as in the case of the Old Testament. It will be written in the heart of men. This implies that the New Covenant will not be a carnal type but spiritual. However, it will produce life instead of death.
The Testament is not going to be written by man or angel but by the Holy Ghost. This shows that the New Covenant will be emanating from eternity and should stand forever. Also under this covenant, the true revelation of God will be made manifest. There is no way any one would say I don’t know God, or I don’t understand God. This is because the covenant is written in the hearts of the people. See Jeremiah 31:33-34, 1John 2:27.
The New Testament is anchored on the love of God. It has nothing to do with our love for God. The Old Testament is proportionate to how much the people under it can demonstrate their love to God. As a matter of fact that order became a flop because they lack the wherewithal to do so.
Old Testament Weakness In God’s Standard:
There is nothing anyone could have done to meet the righteous standard of God. See Isaiah 64:6. The New Testament therefore, was not initiated because man has become righteous. But for the obvious reason that God loved man so much that He wouldn’t like him to continue to live miserably in sin. So while we are still sinning God came down to die. This is the demonstration of His love for us on display.
Now it is interesting to know that this love is not particularized to some certain group of people. But it was offered and released to the whole world. So for God so love the world, not the Jews, not the Gentiles but as many that out there in the world. Irrespective of their race and gender God loved them and “gave His only begotten Son for them. Why? That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” See John 3:16, 2 Corinthians 5:12 – 20. This is the Good News! That man has been delivered from the wages of sin which is death. Note that any soul that sin will surely die. This is the legal standing of the situation and no one could change this standing. Therefore, God decided to take the payment for man.
God Took Man’s Place:
“He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned everyone to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.” Isaiah 53: 3 – 6.
Notice that from the quotations above, because of God’s love for mankind, He has to come and be wounded for our transgressions. Be bruised for our iniquities, be chastised for our peace. One thing very clear from the quotation above is that He received all these for our and not for His. It implies that the New Testament will be established on the bases of the sacrificial blood of an innocent man. See Matthew 26:27 – 28, 2 Corinthians 5:21.
The Man to die in place of mankind is the Christ. He is the one to go through all these things listed above and thereafter will enter into His glory. See Luke 24:25 – 26. It’s by His death God has offered mankind the gift of eternal life. Therefore, as many that believe in Him will certainly receive this eternal life. This is called the God kind of life. A life that is not subjected to sin and death, this is the demonstration of God’s love to mankind.
The Death Of Christ A Necessity:
Obviously, the death of Christ is a very important necessity for man. This is because it was what is needed for him to attain eternal life. Since the wages of sin is death and the gift of God is eternal life see Romans 6:23. Of course it is important to note that the separation power Satan has between man and God is death. Man however, does not have what it takes to undo it. For this reason, it behooves on Christ to die in order to undo it.
Therefore, eternal life is attainable by man in the death of Christ. This is because Christ kept the appointment of death for every man and met the requirements for the judgment. See Hebrews 9:27. As a result of meeting the whole requirements, He ripped off the power of death from Satan through his death. Again see Hebrews 2:14. But this arrangement was beyond the scope of Satan’s knowledge and he didn’t realize that he was playing into the redemptive plan of God for man. See 1 Corinthians 2:8.
Like stated earlier, this was done by God not because man has turn into a new leaf. But while man is still walloping in sin yet God took the step. “For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.” Romans 5:7–9.
In this way God came to take our place so that we can take His place. He took our shame so that we can take His glory. And He took our weakness so that we can take His strength. He took our hatred and gave us His Love so that we can be able to love Him and our fellowmen by His Love. Of course, man without the love of God is a selfish being. But with the love of God inside man he is able to love others and equally love God.
