Why We Should Pray For Our Leaders – Gloria Imuwahen Asiegbu

Leaders Need Prayers:

Leaders Need PrayersLeaders need prayers of their subjects and the more the subjects understand this very important factor the better for them. That leaders need prayers from their subjects should not be something that should be over accentuated. The subjects here include the Christians in the country and in fact the onus is laid on the Christians to perform this duty. Therefore, it’s right to say that leaders need prayers from Christians. Probably, some people may be thinking that leaders know it all therefore they don’t need prayers. The truth is that the adage that says uneasy lies the head that wears the crown is very correct. This is because sometimes the state of the head may be in the right shape but head of the state may not be in the right shape.

It shows that sometimes the structures put in place in a country may be in the right condition but the one to organize them may not. This is one of the reasons leaders need prayers because leaders do not really know it all. Though many do not believe in prayer but as Christians one of the core values of Christianity is prayer. And surely we believe that prayers work and can always work when we put it into action. Again, that leaders need prayers is not something that should sound strange to Christians because it is a biblical injunction.

Leaders Need Prayers From Christians:

Therefore, since it’s a biblical injunction we have no other option than to simply obey it. And in doing that, we should avoid sentiments because it is not about the leader in question but about the injunction. Let’s take a look at one of the biblical injunction here below.

“I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.”

1 Timothy 2:1-6

However, sometimes sentiments becloud our sense of reasoning and we overstep the boundaries. We should avoid sentiments that will lead us into being partisan and because of that we become lackadaisical. The reality is that leaders need prayers and we should pray for them with all amounts of commitment and zeal. The leaders in question must not come from our tribe or religion before we can pray for them.

The Benefits Of Praying For Leaders:

Leaders Need PrayersThe benefit is that if leaders need prayers and we as Christians pray for them, we are equally praying for ourselves. Notice that if through our prayers they become good leaders; we are the ones to benefit from them the most. It means that the good leadership qualities and values from them will trickle down to us. And if we have chosen to do otherwise the result of negative leadership qualities will come to us. What the bible says in the book of Proverbs as stated below is right.

“When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.”

Proverb 29:2

As Christians, we will always like to serve and worship our God freely and in a conducive atmosphere. The fact is that it might not be possible for Christian activities and the gospel to prosper under the leadership of a wicked man. Any man that abhors righteousness will not give Christians freedom to worship. However, the good thing is that through prayer Christians can turn things around. For this reason when leaders need prayer we should not avert the opportunity to pray for them. The expectation of every well-meaning Christian is that the gospel should prosper in the land where he lives. The bible in the book of Proverbs puts it this way;

“The desire of the righteous is only good: but the expectation of the wicked is wrath.”

Proverb 11:23

Our Prayers For Leaders Meet Our Needs Too:

And the only way we can bring our expectation to manifestation is only through prayers. Also, our expectations can only come to us or become reality if the one that leads know what to do. The fact is that the manifestation of our expectations is hidden in the hand of the leaders. There is no way God will come down from heaven and answer our prayers, the answer to our prayers are in the hands of our fellow men.

This teaching Is very insightful : “God Is Not In Control Of This World”

For instance, to rebuild the city of Jerusalem, it requires a prayer answered by God through a king of another country. It wouldn’t have been possible if people like Nehemiah, Ezra and Daniel didn’t pray in their days. They prayed and sought the face of God that they should find grace and favour from the king. This is important to Christians because we should pray that the leaders at the helm of affairs should favour our course in the land we live.

It is true that we may find ourselves in a country that is relatively peaceful and it allows Christians to operate considerably. The truth is that there are other Christians in so many countries that their leaders need prayers from us. We pray for the leadership of these countries so that things will turn around for good for our brethren over there. When we do this we are equally praying for ourselves as well.
