Worshipping The Superstitious And Unknown God – Chukwuemeka Charles Asiegbu

Worshipping Superstitious Unknown God:

Worshipping Superstitious Unknown GodWorshipping superstitious unknown God was commonly seen in the practices of the people of old. And yet this act of worshipping superstitious unknown God has continued even to this present dispensation. This practice of worshipping superstitious unknown God can be defined as a process by which people worship a God that they never knew. This system allows someone to worship God by mere conjectural or rumor. Worse still is that this process of worshipping superstitious unknown God can take a whole life span of an individual. And unfortunately he may not realize that he has been in error.

However, the consequence is that someone can be in this and at the end the God he has been worshipping is unknown to him. This has happened in the olden days and still happening even today among Christians. Many are worshipping superstitious unknown God zealously and intensively without the real knowledge of who God is. That someone has been in Church for many years and seriously and zealously participating in the activities of the church doesn’t mean that he knows God.

In the same vein that someone has been pastoring a church for many years doesn’t guarantee that he knows God as well. Again that someone has had so many great experiences as a Christian doesn’t mean that he or she knows God. It is possible for someone to have experiences without the rightful epignosis (exact knowledge) of God. One thing is very sure and that is age doesn’t define truth and also how long/far or age is not the acid test for right revelation.

God Cannot Be Known By Experiences:

However, the reality is that God cannot be known by experiences but by direct revelation. The Hebrew word for direct revelation is the word Raah. Unfortunately many among us have not known God by direct revelation but by the Hebrew word Shema which means by rumor. This was the fate of a man called Job in Old Testament. Let’s hear his confession as stated below;

“I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee. Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.”

Job 42:5-6

What is revealed knowledge of God? Find out HERE

In the quotation above Job said to God “I heard of thee by the hearing of the ear but now mine eye seeth thee.” Meaning he heard of God from some people, he didn’t have correct or actual knowledge of who God is. So from whatever he heard from people he formed his opinion and knowledge about God and started worshipping Him. Therefore, Job was worshipping God based on the rumor he heard from people. What those people said to him were enticing and palatable to hear and as a result he followed up. In that case he started worshipping superstitious unknown God because people said some nice things about him. And we can really ascertain that actually Job’s relationship with God was based on rumor.

Job Was Worshipping Superstitious Unknown God:

Let’s take a stroll in the book of Job and find out things for ourselves. And the things we will find out will interest us the more as they unfold. The verse below is the simple description of Job.

“There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.”

Job 1:1

This short story is very thrilling read it HERE

The few qualifications put up in the verse above are an indication that Job was a nice person or a good man. Not really that he was a righteous man as per God’s standard because most of the things we will discover will speak otherwise. However, let’s see the verse below what it says and then move forward.

“And his sons went and feasted in their houses, every one his day; they sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them. And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts.  Thus did Job continually.”

Job 1:4-5

The verses above reveal to us that actually Job was worshipping superstitious unknown God in his days. This continued until he came to the realization of whom God is at the tail end of his engagements with God. In the verse above he offered sacrifice to this superstitious unknown God base on rumor.

Fear Was The Motive Behind Job’s Worship:

Worshipping Superstitious Unknown GodThis is because here was no factual knowledge that his children sinned against God. So what drove his motive was something other than knowledge. However, let’s explore further on his activities as we see from quotations below.

“And said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.”

Job 1:21

The verses above actually indicate that Job is worshipping superstitious unknown God because he accused God. Yes he accused God of giving and taking the life of his children. Question, why would God give since He knows He will take? Surprisingly, Job is not different from many Christians today who believe that every calamity that befalls them is from God. This category of Christians is worshipping God based on assumption. They do not actually know God! This is because of their believe that God is at the center of every situation in their life, whether good or bad. They have been taught that good and evil proceeds from God and they believe this fallacious statement against God. As stated by Job in the verse below.

Do you know that God is not in control of this world? Well find out HERE

“Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity?  curse God, and die. But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh.  What?  shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil?  In all this did not Job sin with his lips.”

Job 2:9-10

Worshipping Superstitious Unknown God Triggers Fear:

Practically and intentionally, Job was expecting evil and good things from God at the same time. Another thing to deduce from the activities of job especially as regards to sacrifice is that he didn’t believe in them. Here, his attitude shows that those sacrifices he made were mere formalities and actually it was not done unto God. This is because he did carry those sacrifices out because something was motivating him. So let’s see what actually motivated him in the verse below.

“For my sighing cometh before I eat, and my roarings are poured out like the waters. For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me. I was not in safety, neither had I rest, neither was I quiet; yet trouble came.”

Job 3:24-26

This teaching is very spiritually insightful “The heart the core of life”

Meanwhile, from the above verses we can ascertain that what motivated Job to make the sacrifices that he made was fear. Firstly, he declared that what he greatly feared has come upon him. And that which he was afraid has come unto him. Then he said he was not in safety, neither has rest and quiet yet trouble came. The words above are not the words of a man that knows God. One can’t know God and at the same time be in fears.

Job’s Confessions Changed:

This is basically because Job was worshipping superstitious unknown God but when he knew God his confessions changed. Let’s see what he said below.

“I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee.  Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.”

Job 42:5-6

Why do you go to church? Know more from HERE

Job understood that it wasn’t God that gave and took his children. He also understood that evil things don’t proceed from God. Therefore he repented and then received the blessings of God and restoration. As believers in Christ we should understand that no evil proceeds from God but from Satan. And when evil things come our ways we should resist the producer and he will flee from us.
