The Believer’s Gentleness A Plus – Gloria Imuwahen Asiegbu

Believer’s Gentleness:

Believer's GentlenessBeliever’s gentleness: the word gentleness could also mean mildness, calmness, placidness, tenderness, and kindness. The opposite of gentleness is roughness or harshness. This shows that the believer’s gentleness will not reflect anything rough or harsh.  I want to indicate that in handling this topic “believer’s gentleness, meekness is another word that is together with it.

Defining believer’s gentleness from the angle of the Christian faith would mean to separate it from the kind of gentleness exhibited by people in the world. This implies that anyone can demonstrate gentleness but not everyone can demonstrate believer’s gentleness. Therefore, the believer’s gentleness is the first port of call to ascertain a believer’s life. It is like the signpost signifying attitudinally that someone is a believer. Believer’s gentleness is the nature people have to see first in order to get attracted to someone as a believer. Therefore, this quality is a must for all believers.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”

 Galatians 5:22-23

“Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.”

 Matthew 11:29

The phrase in the verse above “I am meek and lowly” is an expression of fact.  I mean it is an emphatic statement describing the nature of Jesus. It rightly points out the character of Jesus in a nutshell.  Also, it is a clear fact that Jesus is a Man. And actually He is a man and lived and walked the face of this earth in meekness and gentleness. Therefore, His followers have no option than to live the way and manner He lived.

The Areas To Notice Believer’s Gentleness:

Note: your politeness in these areas matters –

  1. In our watching or looking (we must control the way we watch or look at things)
  2. And in our speaking (we must control the way we speak, we should not speak like the people in the world)
  3. In our reactions and anger (we must control the way we react to situation or people)

Let’s see the reaction and what Jesus said this quotation below;

“And one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.  Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him.”

 Luke 22:50 – 51

Also we can see these other verses John 8:4 – 7, Matthew 17:27 and Luke 9:52 – 56.

It is important to say that the deposition of Jesus in the verses above showcased gentleness to core. Therefore, the believer’s gentleness must be a build up from the nature and disposition of Christ. No one should be an example for a believer except Christ. In that case, if such character is not in Christ it mustn’t be in the believer.

It is for this reason Apostle Paul admonishes believers and encouraged them to live out the character of Christ in them. Let’s see what he said in the verse below.

“That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.”

Philemon 1:6

The Entry Point Of Weaknesses:

“For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.”

1 John 2:16-17

  1. The lust of the flesh
  2. The lust of the eyes
  3. And the pride of life

The above points can expose the inability a believer to demonstrate that believer’s gentleness in him.

The Advantages of Believer’s Gentleness & Meekness:

Believer's Gentleness“Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unjust, and not before the saints? Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? And if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters? Know ye not that we shall judge angels? How much more things that pertain to this life? If then ye have judgments of things pertaining to this life, set them to judge who are least esteemed in the church. I speak to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you? no, not one that shall be able to judge between his brethren?

But brother goeth to law with brother, and that before the unbelievers. Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another. Why do ye not rather take wrong? why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded?”

1 Corinthians 6:1-7

Believer’s gentleness can help solve problem between families and friends etc. This is because the believer’s gentleness and his meekness is seen in the areas of forgiveness.  He forgives wrong done to him easily. Again, believer’s gentleness or meekness attracts favour and good company. Gentleness is an impressive spot that attracts trust from people.

The disadvantages of not being gentle and meek:

Roughness, harshness and brutality expel and repel people from one who have them.

“For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise. But we will not boast of things without our measure, but according to the measure of the rule which God hath distributed to us, a measure to reach even unto you. For we stretch not ourselves beyond our measure, as though we reached not unto you. For we are come as far as to you also in preaching the gospel of Christ. Not boasting of things without our measure, that is, of other men’s labours; but having hope, when your faith is increased, that we shall be enlarged by you according to our rule abundantly.”

2 Corinthians 10:12-15
