Teaching Right Doctrine: How To Understand The Scripture Episode 12

Teaching Right Doctrine:

Teaching Right DoctrineTeaching right doctrine is very important. This is because a lack of proper understanding of the Scripture will make someone to teach and induce wrong doctrine.  And the truth is that benefits of teaching right doctrine will elude his or her adherences. However, not teaching right doctrine may not be an intentional act but as a result of knowledge limitation. And because of this many by proxy have become false teachers. On the other hand there are people who are teaching right doctrine by virtue of revelation knowledge from the Scripture.

If anyone teaching wrong doctrine hears them and refuses to amend such individual is a confirmed false teacher. Teaching here doesn’t necessarily mean verbal. It also involves practices and ordinances observe by people who are in position and those below them can imitate them.

Now we have seen a similar situation between Apostle Paul and Apostle Peter. The evidence is there that Apostle Peter was wrongly inducing a doctrine that is not in line with the truth.  Apostle Paul came in to redirect his steps to teaching right doctrine and he concurred to his assertions. The implication of this is that Apostle Peter was not a false teacher. Though he was teaching wrong doctrine he was able to amend when correction from the Scripture came via Apostle Paul. There is something important every believer should hold on here. And that is Apostle Peter didn’t say because he’s senior therefore, Apostle Paul has no right to correct him. He accepted the correction notwithstanding his position in the ministry.

Teaching Right Doctrine The Right Stance:

This should be the mind of every one who is teaching or preaching the gospel. And that is to accept correction from those teaching right doctrine. No one has monopoly over knowledge and not even the knowledge of the Scripture. And therefore they should have an open mind and ready to accept correction when it comes. This will definitely enhance the knowledge capability of the people under them. This shouldn’t be a thing of ego. One should be ready to condense his or her individual ego and forgo about pride and take up the correction. This is not just because of him or her but mainly because of the souls under them. And it pays to do so because such people will definitely earn regard in the sight of the people under them.

However, because of teaching right doctrine Apostle Paul advised his progeny in the Lord Pastor Timothy as stated below.

“Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.”

2 Timothy 4:1.

So, it is important that teaching right doctrine continues even when the influx of the wrong doctrine is there. And this he or she should continue to do until it gains ground. The benefit can be seen from the advice Apostle Paul gave to Pastor Timothy as indicated below.

“Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.”

1Timothy 4:16

What It Means To Fight A good Fight Of Faith:

Here, taking correction from those teaching right doctrine is not just about you but about others as well. As a leader, the correction you accept and teach will permeate the souls of the people you lead and it helps to bring them to the right knowledge.

This also requires that one adheres to the advice Apostle Paul gave to Pastor Timothy below.

“Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.”

1Timothy 6:12

To fight a good fight of faith is not like one dragging or exchanging blows with another. What Apostle Paul meant is that Timothy should hold firm to whatever that he has taught him and continue in them. And what Apostle Paul was saying is for him to continue in teaching right doctrine he has imbued in him.

“But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience.”

2Timothy 3:10

Anyone who holds firm the word of truth is invariably fighting a good fight of faith. In other words, any teacher who holds and maintains his position in the word of truth is definitely fighting a good fight of faith.

The Ways To Avoid False Teaching:

One of the ways one can be caught up by false teaching is by teaching the Scripture based on assumption. The Scripture is very clear. However, one needs to study and be taught right in order to unravel the grey areas in it. Do not conclude because you heard someone whom you respect teach on a particular subject and in it; you just believe the person in question is right. It is right to believe when you have gone through his or her teaching over and over again and ascertain that it is right. It is important to evaluate every teaching you hear.

And that is by juxtaposing whatever the teacher must have taught side by side with the nature of Christ. This is what we know as studying in the “light of Christ.” Studying is the light of Christ is where teaching right doctrine emanates from. It helps any learner to escape the trap of false teaching.

See below what Apostle Peter declared in his second epistle

“Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.”

2 Peter 1:20

The fact is that no teacher of the Scripture has an opinion when it comes to the subject matters of the Scripture. We are not supposed to see things our own way. We don’t have our own way in the matters of the Scripture we should see it the way the Scripture sees. Whatever that has been stated in the Scripture does not in any way mean something else today from what it meant when it was stated at the time of writing it.

No Teacher Has An Opinion:

Teaching Right DoctrineSo we don’t have to assume or have an addendum to what has been said as in having opinion. This standard establishes someone in teaching right doctrine. The best way remains that we should study. And as we do that by the grace given to us which is the ability of the Holy Ghost in us. We are bound to come to knowledge in the subject matter in question.

There are three main subjects every teacher must be found teaching at a given time by commission or by omission. These are sin, righteousness and judgment and teaching right doctrine is pivoted on them. Let’s see what Jesus spoke concerning the way and manner these can be handled.

“And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment, of sin, because they believe not on me; of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.”

John 16:8-11

The quotation above indicates that the Holy Ghost will come and He will reveal things about what Jesus has done.  Things He has done as regards to sin and what He has done as regards to righteousness.  And definitely what he has done as regards to judgment. In order to have a proper understanding of them they have to be taught in the light of Christ. Of course teaching in the light of Christ is teaching right doctrine!
