Christian weakness is overtly the soft spot most people I have engaged in discussions pinpoints out about Christianity. There is this assumption that Christians are a weak sect. They are seen as a sect that cannot bite even though they have the teeth to bite. And this is coming from the backdrop of the fact that Christians seemingly cow when oppressed. So the Christian weakness is generally seen in the time of oppression from other religious organizations.

The expectation is that Christians should rise and defend themselves from aggression. And as usual if the factor of Christian weakness plays out the expectations of people is cut off. The expectation is that in any attack against Christians there should be a reprisal attack from them. And if it didn’t happen the way and manner people think then the conclusion is the factor called Christian weakness. The truth is that Christian weakness is a factor that is imbued in them by so many biblical injunctions. And these biblical injunctions have aided in buttressing the factor of Christian weakness.
And of course truly many are not taking it lightly even among the Christian folds. The youths among them are having the feeling that it makes them look feeble in the sight of those that should have receive their show of force. On the other hand it seems the oppressors are taking them for granted and of course should continue in their evil deeds.
Is Christian Weakness A Show Of Weakness?
Somehow, it seems being born into a Christian family has become an automatic ticket to become feeble. This is because from the early years of someone’s life he’s inducted into the teaching that promotes weakness. This prohibition makes him appear in a way that his hands are tight and cannot move for any reprisal attack against him.

In case of any confrontation from someone/people they know that they can take on squarely but they cannot help it. Right before them, they are attacked, their parents and sisters attacked and just because they are Christians and they couldn’t do anything. This is happening because in their homes at one time or the other they have been taught something like:
“But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.”
The worldview of the above verse sounds and portrays a demeaning situation for any human being.
The right stance is that there should be a response from the other end if attacked. The response should come in the form of a demonstrative action or a legal action challenging the situation at hand. But a surface interpretation of the above verse doesn’t support both stances. The implication of the above verse is that the person in question should let go and concede to be at fault if necessary.
Understanding The Biblical Injunctions:
The verse above makes the offended and afflicted to be the one in pursuance of peace irrespective of whose ox is gore. Also, the verse above is a reflection of what the background or the foundation of Christianity is like. And it shows that the bedrock of Christianity is peace not commotion. However, on the contrary these statements above simply epitomize weakness and cowardice and do not in any way signify strength. In fact it shows that any organization with this kind of setting will not last long because oppression and persecution will eat it up.

On the other hand, this factor called Christian weakness has been on from the inception of Christianity. And even Jesus Christ told the early Christians that persecution and oppression will be the order of the day in their lives. The events that followed the resurrection and ascension of Christ confirmed the statement of Jesus. Many of the early Christians faced persecutions and some died as a result of it. Jesus’s advice to them was this
“But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come.”
The advice from Jesus didn’t say when they persecute carry out a reprisal attack. It says when they persecute you flee into another city. This implies that if you are a Christian and persecution comes to you and after weighing the options the best should be to flee to another city.
The Benefits Of Christian Weakness:
This is very important because if one has life the tendency for him to accomplish his heart desires is there. In that case you can only accomplish your ministry in Christ if you are alive. The understanding one should build from this statement is that why the enemy is attacking is to destroy the ministry you have in Christ. However, if one leaves the city there is the possibility of doing great ministerial work elsewhere. And also the possibility of one coming back to that same city and do great ministerial work is there.
Therefore, Christian weakness culminates into what becomes their strength. And again, Christian weakness in a way reflects how much Christians trusts their God and not their strength. This statement is true and that is why over the centuries, Christians have been facing persecution and no force has succeeded in facing them out of the earth.
Let’s see what Jesus said in these verses below:
“But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.”

Now the verses above are among those statements that depict Christian weakness. Proper analyses of the verses above depict strength and not weakness. In the statement, the reason to pray for them that persecution Christians in stated in the next verse which is verse 45. It says for Christians to be the children of their father which is in heaven.
Christian Weakness Is Not A Weak Quality:
So, one of the criteria that qualifies one as a child of God is to pray for those who despitefully use you and persecute you. This benefit outwits the burden and scares of affliction and persecution. What this entails is that if one revenges or carries out a reprisal attack he or she misses the qualification of sons of God!

No wonder apostle Paul admonishes Christians thus;
“Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.”

The reality is that evil acts cannot overcome goodness. And that is why on that night Jesus was arrested, the action Jesus took in fixing Marcus’s ear is an indication that Christianity is not for war. However, irrespective of the persecution Christians have been facing right from inception of Christianity, Christianity has continued to wax strong and stronger. Therefore, Christian weakness is indeed the strength of Christians!
