God’s Glory: What Is The Glory Of God – Pastor Chukwuemeka Charles Asiegbu

God’s Glory The Misnomer:

God's GloryGod’s glory or the glory of God has become a dogmatic issue even in Christianity today. Many professing believers of Christ have different views about what God’s glory is. And somehow there has been a misplaced primacies attached to it. For instance in a crusade the expectation is that during prayers things like healing, signs and wonders should take place. And also, casting out demons and manifestations like people rolling on ground can take place.

The man of God can wave his hand many people find themselves on the ground. The implication of the above narratives is that the revelation of God’s glory is in that crusade. The lack of the aforementioned where a man of God preached and souls believed means God’s glory is absent. Therefore, it is presumed that the yardstick to ascertain God’s glory in a crusade is the manifestation of signs and wonders.

Let’s see what this quotation has for us:

“And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory.”

Exodus 33:18

Moses Asked For God’s Glory:

The issue is this, why would Moses ask God to show him His glory as stated in the quotation above? If actually miracles, signs and wonders are things that depict God’s glory Moses wouldn’t have asked God to show him His glory. This is because prior to this time Moses had done great miracles and demonstrated great signs and wonders. The kind of miracles, signs and wonders that no man of God living presently and even then has done. And if it is political power he had it. This is because he was in control of a nation of about three million citizens. And they were fighting and defeating several formidable nations.

This shows that the revelation of God’s glory is not in the manifestation of things or events. God’s glory is something bigger than tangible occurrence of signs and wonders and what physical power can demonstrate. Yes, in the Old Testament there are several events that took place and the people tagged such God’s glory. Well, these are symbolic events that are shadows of the real thing to come and therefore, needed interpretation. Remember, the Egyptians also had some kind of signs and wonders. And if God’s glory or the glory is all about signs and wonders, the implication is that Egyptians possessed it.

God’s Reply To Moses:

However, God replied Moses his request and told him thus:

“And he said, Thou canst not see my face for there shall no man see me, and live. The LORD said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock. It shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by. I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts but my face shall not be seen”

Exodus 33:20-23

The word glory in the Hebrew text is kabowd – meaning weight as in figurative manner, but depicts splendor or copiousness. In other words what Moses was asking for is to see the splendor of God. It implies that all these miracles, signs and wonders and political power that he had didn’t demonstrate God’s glory (splendor). From the reply God gave Moses in the quotation above, it shows that Moses was asking for the physical manifestation of God. This is because the physical appearance of God will definitely reveal God’s glory.

Moses understood that all these things that he was demonstrating was transient or shadows of the real thing to come. He wanted God’s glory which is the real glory that is permanent. He was asking for a New Testament life where God will fully tabernacle in man. And for that to happen, God has to come out of God and dwell in a man.

God’s Glory Revealed In A Man:

God's GloryHowever, God didn’t really deny Moses his request because when He fully appeared in a man he saw Him. Considering that Moses was present at the mountain of transfiguration and spoke with God in human flesh. He really saw the glory of God tabernacle in human flesh and his request answered by God in Jesus. The will of God is that He will tabernacle in man not just in Jesus only. But for that to happen, He needs to be processed, by this I mean He has to die and resurrect. And then come into man as the Holy Spirit. This is when God’s glory will tabernacle permanently in man. This man that God will come into permanently is the New Creation Man.

The book of Revelation puts it better this way:

“And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.”

Revelation 21:3

God’s Glory Is Located In The Believer:

This is the life Moses was asking for. And also David as a prophet saw these category of people and he wished to be like them even in his dispensation. However, in his dispensation it wasn’t possible but he prophesied about them. Let’s see what he said in Psalm 102:18 –

“This shall be written for the generation to come and the people which shall be created shall praise the LORD.”

The writings for the generation to come are only in the Epistles. The Epistles are the perfect imprint that describes the nature of God in a man. And no wonder Apostle John declared it this way;

“And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.”

 (John 1:16).

And verse 18 concludes it better –

“No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.”

However, the only way to reveal this God’s glory today is through the preaching of the gospel of Jesus Christ to as many that have not believed. The Christ is the Man God that came to dwell among men.  And the acceptance of Him in the life of any individual means the acceptance of the Holy Spirit in a man. The Holy Spirit in a man is that God’s glory that eluded the people of the Old Testament.
