Learning From John The Baptist Political Involvement

Misplace Priority:

Misplace PriorityMisplace priority can always occur in people’s life and engagements. One can say that misplace priority is as a result of delusion that proceeds from sometimes self-centeredness. When one considers himself more important than the mission he has at hand to accomplish. The result of this is that his attention focuses on how he can gratify self. Misplace priority cannot be averted in a process if one thinks of himself higher than the mission he has. The only way one cannot misplace priority is to be selfless in carrying out his mission. Selfless in this context means that he is focusing at the goal which is the overall benefit from his mission. It is interesting to know that the benefit of every mission does not entirely rest on the mission executer.

Note that no one ever enjoys hundred percent of his labour alone. One labours and works hard for others to enjoy, even people you don’t know must enjoy from your sweat. This statement is factual and there’s nothing one can do about it. Take for instance; our Lord Jesus didn’t misplace his priority which is to save mankind from sin. The fact is that He was not left without distractions but He didn’t go after the distractions. Today, salvation is given to mankind on the platter of His suffering because He didn’t misplace priority. Therefore, to avoid misplacement of priority in our mission, there must a defined purpose.

To Avoid Misplace Priority Define The Purpose:

Overtly, God never called anybody into any ministry without a defined purpose. The evidence of this statement is very overwhelming in the scripture. Their mission priority was clearly stated and so many followed accordingly and some deviated from their course. Many of them who misplaced priority didn’t fulfill their mission here on earth. And some fulfill their mission but were carried away by the euphoria of their achievement. Whereas is at this time they should consolidate on whatever they have achieved and make sure the benefit tickles down. John the Baptist was send by God and his mission declared thus:

“Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself? He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias. And they which were sent were of the Pharisees.”

John 1:22-24

The mission of John the Baptist was prophesied by prophet Isaiah (Isaiah 40:3). So his ministry had a solid foundation rooted in the prophecy. The ministry was not just given to him; also the way to go about it was given to him as well. This is in order to make thing easy and less complicated for him.

Follow The Purpose:

The ministry of John the Baptist is to the make the way of the Messiah straight. Making the way of the Messiah straight means to be the one to identify the Messiah and all Israel will know that the Messiah has arrived. And he declared that He who sent him asked him to do something in order to identify the Messiah.

“And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.”

John 1:33

The quotation above is indicating that John received a means to identify the Messiah and that means is water baptism. And to confirm that he has identified the Messiah, he proclaimed it to the hearing of people that Jesus is the lamb of God that takes the sins of the world away (John 1:29). The implication here is that John’s mission has been accomplished. His ministry has been fulfilled. This is interesting because the Messiah has been unveiled and all Israel has seen him as declared by John.

Therefore, no one should look at John but focus attention on Jesus the Messiah. Now the Messiah is the yearning of the people of Israel, and everyone was expecting him to come. The arrival of the Messiah means the inception of the salvation of mankind. Therefore, the arrival of the Messiah means the termination of the ministry of John the Baptist. So what is expected of John the Baptist was to join in the ministry of Jesus the Messiah.

John The Baptist Should Have Followed Christ:

Misplace PriorityHowever, John the Baptist didn’t follow Jesus. He stayed without ministry because the day he announced Jesus as the Messiah is the day his ministry ended. In this case whatever John was doing aside Jesus is not his ministry. And such gave him the opportunity to start middling into other affairs that was not his ministry. Misplace priority if not tackled becomes a big issue in one’s mission or task in life. John allowed misplace priority to creep into his ministry and there is always consequences to every action one takes.

The consequences of action taken may be positive or negative that is why as believers we should be mindful of our steps. The result of his action is imprisonment from the authority and consequently he died. Therefore, John the Baptist didn’t actually finish his ministry because he misplaced his priority. If John had followed Jesus, his ministry would have been fulfilled, no wonder why the least in the Kingdom is greater than John.

Now, this is important for us as believers, our ministry is to reconcile men to God.

“To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.”

2 Corinthians 5:19

Jesus Didn’t Misplace Priority:

We are called to reconcile men to God and not to talk about politics or politicians. Our ministry is to bring the knowledge of God to the people God has called us to take care of. We are not called to talk about what politicians are doing in their political world. The kingdom that believers belong and the kingdom the politicians belong is two worlds apart.

We don’t really have much in common and therefore we cannot fly together. Throughout Jesus’s ministry here on earth He never talked about the political situation in His days. And it is very obvious that His country was under the rule of the Romans. None of His sermons reflects the political situation of that time. This is the main reason why when John the Baptist entered into the political brouhaha Jesus didn’t go visiting him. Jesus didn’t go because John has misplace priority he was supposed to work with.

However He came preaching the Kingdom of God and not the kingdom of men. There were some politicians and wealthy men that were among His followers but He never made them His anchor head and never bragged about them. In fact Jesus didn’t misplace priority He was very focused even unto death.
