God’s Knowledge: How To Understand The Scripture Episode 5

Gods Knowledge: Continued from the last Episode:

God’s Knowledge As A Factor In Studying The Scripture:

Gods knowledge

The level of God’s Knowledge in people of different generations played important role in the recording of the scripture. However, in the course of events many cultures waned up. The fact is that most things associated with them couldn’t find relevancy in the system of things. And hence the judgment and the validation the received varies. For instance, in the days of Noah, his righteous life becomes the standing point to judge the culture of his generation. Notice that his righteousness is a display of the level of God’s knowledge in him. The same is applicable to Daniel and his colleagues.

The level of Gods knowledge which they brought into the land of Babylon became the standard to judge its culture as vile. So certain cultures seen as perfect at certain times became vile as Gods knowledge in man increases. The result is that the arrival of God’s knowledge induces the eradication of such cultures in the land. However, Gods knowledge also proved the Jewish culture wrong. The revelation of Gods knowledge came to them by God’s Son, and opened the loopholes in their culture.

This revelation was made open in the ways and manners they worshipped God. It is important to point out that their culture was established based on their level of understanding of the scripture. The fact is that their culture is a product of wrong interpretation of the Scripture. The arrival of God’s knowledge exposed the reality that they were practicing wrong culture. For instance, Jesus speaking to them said “Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.” This statement indicates that they lacked God’s knowledge in them.

God’s Knowledge As The Yardstick:

However, it is interesting to know that laws are byproduct of what is obtainable from the cultures people practice.  And in case of any defiance it amounts to serious penalties. There were so many unjustifiable things done to humanity through culture because of the lack of God’s knowledge. These unjustifiable things do happen to people in diverse ways depending on the level of the meanness of the culture. On the other had, culture even in this present day has influence the ways and manners Christians worship God.

Though we are Christians but we bring in some elements of our cultures into our act of worship. The impact of culture cannot be overlooked but shouldn’t be used as a yardstick to evaluate the level of God’s knowledge in people. Therefore, God’s knowledge according to the stipulation of the Scriptures takes preeminence over any cultural law. This statement is true because the knowledge of God is supreme to any law. See 2 Corinthians 10:4-5. It is something we cannot deny that cultural laws are accepted among some Christian folds.  Somehow these laws are allowed in order to maintain law and order.

However, the reality is that it should not be the standard to establish Christian ethics because some situations are exceptional. Like said in previous episodes, some instructions were allowed to exist in the some Christian folds because of their culture and also, in order to allow peace and orderliness to prevail in their gathering.

God’s Knowledge Verses The Laws:

Nevertheless, in many other places where Christians gather such instructions were not applicable because they have a different cultural background. Let’s see one or two verses as an example:

“Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience,as also saith the law. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.”

1 Corinthians 14:34-35

The question to ask from the verses above is which law? It is interesting to know that the law here is not taking about the Jewish law. This is because he was not addressing a Jewish congregation but a Corinthian congregation.  And therefore, the law here is a Corinthian cultural law.

For a proper evaluation of this instruction we have to compare this epistle written to the Corinthians to other epistles.  And mainly those epistles written by this same author to other churches in different countries. Evidence shows that fewer churches received this instruction and many churches in different places didn’t receive it. However, the women there were applauded for their immense contributions to the work of the ministry of Christ. Watch this:

“I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea. That ye receive her in the Lord, as becometh saints, and that ye assist her in whatsoever business she hath need of you: for she hath been a succourer of many, and of myself also. Greet Priscilla and Aquila my helpers in Christ Jesus”

Romans 16:1-3

The Instructions To The Churches:

In the verse above we see a woman being commended by the same author of first Corinthians.  And she is called a servant of the Church which means she had ministerial role in the Church. Also she was even sent to another Church in Rome to minister. For one to minister he or she must have a speaking role.

And when you speak in the Church both men and women are there to listen.  Another woman was mentioned in the verse above, and that is Priscilla.  And we understand that this Priscilla was the one who helped to expound the Scriptures better to Apollos. Priscilla was a woman and she taught a man called Apollos!

Therefore, what really took place in Corinth was that the women there were saucy and unruly to their husbands.  Not just at home but in the Church because many of the women see themselves better in understanding than their husbands. Hence, the uncouth attitude from them to their husbands.

In order to put things in the proper perspective through God’s knowledge, Apostle Paul has to use his prerogative and insert that cultural instruction. The expectation is that it will help to instill peace and orderliness in the services. However, as a result of improper digestion of this instruction from Apostle Paul to the Church in Corinth, many churches have banned their female folks not to teach in the Church. This is very wrong!
