Lovingkindness Of God:
Today we are going to take a look at the word Lovingkindness of God. This word is predominantly used by the psalmist in the bible. It is used to depict God’s character and personality. In the Old Testament alone the word lovingkindness appears in about 29 places. It is not directly used in the New Testament but the word close to it in the New Testament is Grace. The people in the Old Testament especially the psalmists expressly use this word to depict that nature of God which reveals His affection.
King David, one of the great psalmists in the bible has this to say in one of his psalms.
“I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy lovingkindness and thy truth from the great congregation.”

This lovingkindness is of God, which implies that it proceeds from God and since it proceeds from God, it is God’s attribute. Hence, the attachment of this attribute to God is because it is particular to Him. If someone therefore, wants to give a total and full detail of God’s biography he must include this attribute of God. And by any means lovingkindness is excluded in his detail, it means that such biography is incomplete. In this case, if one is approaching God for anything one of the things he should expect is his lovingkindness.
The Benefit Of God’s Lovingkindness:
One of the things this attribute of God has helped to create is a continuous and lasting relationship between God and people who worship Him. It has helped them to always see God as a malleable being. Therefore, no matter the situation, the lovingkindness of God is constant because God does not change. One receives the lovingkindness of God not because of one’s right standing. This is because it doesn’t depend on the people. In fact the lovingkindness of God is only made possible in an offensive situation. Since it is independent of man, it means that it is a continuous thing. God doesn’t vary in His nature, so also His attributes do not vary. This implies that the level of offense does not determine how God shows His lovingkindness but His nature.

When To Expect God’s Lovingkindness:
If one can ascertain the nature of this quality of God, it will definitely help one to know how to relate with God. The psalmist once again declares thus;
“Yet the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life.”
Also read psalm 92:2 “To shew forth thy lovingkindness in the morning, and thy faithfulness every night,”
We can see from the above quotation from the psalmist, there is no odd time to expect God’s lovingkindness. At any point in time one should expect God’s lovingkindness because it is always available. Again the quotation above will help to increase the level of trust one has on God. This is because since this attribute of God is always available one cannot be restrained in approaching God for it. In this case, it shows how wonderful it is to relate with God. It removes the thought of fear and increases one’s faith in God. And because of this one’s expectation should be to walk into the thrown of God with all sense of boldness. For sure rejection is not your portion in God because His lovingkindness is constant.

Lovingkindness Is Better Than Life:
Again, the psalmist puts it this way “Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee.” (Psalms 63:3). Actually this got me thinking, and I know it startles your heart as well. The above verse says that “Because thy lovingkindness is better than life.” This is important to me because, everyone prays for life and here it says that the lovingkindness of God is better than life. And actually there is a deep message this verse is trying to pass to us and that is “what will life be like without this attribute of God?”
Of course the answer is that it will be meaningless. It is like the vehicle that carries the life we have. If this character of God stops in one’s life that means that the existence of such life is worthless. Here is because of this the psalmist asked this question “Shall thy lovingkindness be declared in the grave? or thy faithfulness in destruction? (Psalms 88:11).
Understanding The Lovingkindness Of God Is Wisdom:
“Whoso is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the lovingkindness of the LORD.” (Psalm 107:43)
I believe the best thing we should do is to get acquainted with the knowledge of God’s lovingkindness. This is important because our understanding of it will help us to live a life in the flow of it. Also, the understanding of this attribute of God will guard our steps in a way it will not be abused. I want us to see what the psalmist says in this direction “For thy lovingkindness is before mine eyes: and I have walked in thy truth.” (Psalms 26:3). So when this God’s character is before us as our focus, there is no way we will abuse it. The benefit of this is that it will cause us to walk in God’s truth.

Walking in God’s truth here means to walk in the reality of the knowledge of God’s will. This is what Apostle Paul was trying to express when he said “be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;” (Colossians 1:9). The result of this will make us live a life that is worthy and then bear the right fruit for every good work. And because we are walking under the shades of this God’s character, it makes us wise in relating with God and our fellow men.
