Mount Zion the City of the Living God:
“But ye are come unto Mount Zion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.”
Hebrews 12:22 – 24 (KJV)
Mount Zion In Christ:
The truth is that when an unbeliever receives the message of Christ and believed in it, he has come into Christ. Here, one has to recognize that the term In Christ is a place. And when one has come into Christ his association changes. The text of interest which is above highlights some certain facts about the place the believer has come into. We shall be dealing with them as we continue in this teaching. In Christ as a place has description that makes it unique and differentiates it from every other place.
So someone can really ascertain if actually he is In Christ by the description of the place he is. If what is obtainable in the place doesn’t fit into the description of In Christ, it means that the person is in a wrong place though he claims to be In Christ. The quotation above says we have come unto mount Zion. And it says that this mount Zion is the city of the living God. Therefore, it implies that mount Zion is a city and not an ordinary mount.
This city is named after the living God, which suggests that the city belongs to the living God. There are many places in the Bible where the word or term mount Zion appears. However, I would like us to discuss one of them to accentuate its relevance as regards to the term In Christ.

Dealing With Obadiah 1:17
The prophet named Obadiah made a crucial statement in his book and I quote “But upon mount Zion shall be deliverance, and there shall be holiness; and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions.”(Obadiah 1:17).
The statement Mount Zion here is referring to a physical location, indicating that it is a city or place. The prophet says one significant thing about it which is, ‘upon mount Zion shall be deliverance’. To understand the meaning of the word deliverance which is an English word we have to know the root word in Hebrew.
And the Hebrew word is pleytah. The word pleytah means escaped portion or remnant. It is suggesting that upon mount Zion shall be the escaped portion or remnant. It is important to note that the subject of the whole chapter is war. This implies that the prophet is saying that upon the mount of Zion shall be the escaped people from the war. That is the location of the remnant of the war shall be upon mount Zion.
It isn’t indicating that the remnant shall be delivered in mount Zion, but the delivered shall be found upon mount Zion. The deliverance didn’t take place on mount Zion but the delivered are found on mount Zion. So the delivered were in the hand of the enemy but have been set free and brought into mount Zion.
What Does Mount Zion Stands For:
Mouth Zion therefore, is a place of safety. This shows that mount Zion is the spiritual place where believers gets nourishment. They are not in Mount Zion for the sake of it but to bring them up in God’s way. It is important because Mount Zion is the city of the living God.
In order to create a better understanding of the two quotations I use above, which is Obadiah 1:17 and Hebrews 12:22, it is necessary to spice it up with another quotation. This will help us to get to where I am driving to. Let’s see what Apostle Paul wrote in his epistle to the Colossians and I quote “Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son.” (Colossians 1:13).

The statement ‘delivered us’ from the quotation above is an aorist statement. Indicating what is said now but will also take place in the future though at presence the impact is not felt. So it doesn’t depend on feeling but in knowing. So, in the quotation above, it states that God has delivered us from the power of darkness. This means that before we came into Christ we were in the hand of the power of darkness.

The Realm of Mount Zion in Hebrews 12:22:
However, deliverance has taken place by the hand of God. And He didn’t just deliver us but He brought us into the Kingdom of His Son. In this case, the delivered are found in the Kingdom of His Son. The Kingdom of His Son is the place; the playtah. Therefore, all believers are delivered from the power of darkness and brought into mount Zion the city of the living God.
The mount Zion in Hebrews 12:22, is not a physical place, but a spiritual enclave, where all believers come into. This mount Zion is Christ. This is because; “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17). Also it can be referred as the Kingdom of His Son. This implies that since the delivered are now in the kingdom of Christ, they don’t need to be delivered again.
However, what they need is to understand the place they have come into. The understanding of the place will definitely put their mind in the right shape. It will help to remove the mentality of captivity they have suffered in the hand of the power of darkness. Therefore, they have to undergo mental orientation to be able to identify themselves with the new environment. For this reason, we have to talk some more on the environment of Mount Zion the city of the living God.

Mount Zion Is The Heavenly Jerusalem:
Mount Zion is an epitome of freedom. And because of this no one in it is in captivity or bondage of any sorts. All the occupants of mount Zion are the delivered lots; they don’t need deliverance again. Of course, one should not seek for freedom while he is in freedom. Jesus speaking in the gospel says and I quote “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”(John 8:36).
The delivered lots have been set free and they are free indeed. However, like I rightly pointed out earlier, what they need is to understand the new environment which they have come into. And most importantly, they should consequently identify with the things available in it. Another thing to note is that, this mount is the city of the living God, which makes it a possession of God. “Heavenly Jerusalem is the city of the living God”. Interestingly the word Jerusalem is a combination of two Hebrew words Jeru meaning a city and salem meaning peace. In other words, Jerusalem means city of peace. Here, the location of this city is in heaven, and also refers as the heavenly Jerusalem.
The Greek word translated heaven is the word Epouranios, meaning a place that is real but in the abstract. So this Jerusalem is not the physical Jerusalem, is therefore spiritual. On this note, whatever the writer of the book of Hebrews is referring to here is not a tangible thing. However, it can connote to something that has spiritual reality.
Mount Zion Is Not A Place Of Physical Concept:
The city of the living God, which is the heavenly Jerusalem, is a spiritual entity. And as a result it cannot be governed by a physical principle. It implies that the occupants of this city are not under the control of manmade or physical rules. The delivered lots (believers) exist within the precepts of the city and these precepts are spiritual in nature. It is a total absurdity to try to merge them with the manmade or natural precepts. The only thing that has control or authority over the life of the believer is the precepts of the city he or she now lives.
Trying to induce a physical concept to have dominion over him will not work. However it can only work if he is ignorant of where he is or who he has become. Hence, the need to understand where the believer has come into and who he has become is a necessity. Therefore, it is an understanding fact that is factual if one says that the believer is in the Kingdom of God’s Son. This Kingdom is the city of the living God, aka the heavenly Jerusalem. This implies that the life of the believer is and of course revolves around the trajectory of the spiritual precepts of the heavenly Jerusalem.
