Anytime we fast; we should crave for God to notice our fast not men. This is because a day of fasting is an acceptable day unto the Lord. So, to publicize our prayer and fasting program on social media and sharing of flyers to create awareness is wrong. The reason is because is contrary to the tenets of fasting as revealed in the New Covenant. Our Lord Jesus puts it better in Matthew 6:16-18, in it shows our fasting must reflect God’s values and ethics.
At the beginning of the year, a lot of Christian communities all over the world indulge in prayer and fasting. The period of this fasting program may either be a short or long period of time. The fact that fasting is scriptural doesn’t mean that once we embark on it; profitability is a guarantee. There are, however, things that we need to know and practice during our fast in order to make it profitable. For instance; we must have to constantly realize that fasting must be done in way it has to please God.
Biblical Truth About Fasting:
This is an exceptionally great biblical truth about fasting that has to be whole heartedly embraced. And if accepted it will help to establish a platform for a profitable fast. This is however a call to redefine the motive of our fast, by asking the question: “For whom am I fasting?” Let’s read from Matthew 6:16-18 in order to have clear cut knowledge of what Jesus said on this issue.
“16 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 17 But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; 18 THAT THOU APPEAR NOT UNTO MEN TO FAST, BUT UNTO THY FATHER WHICH IS IN SECRET: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly”.

This supposes that people and groups that publicize our prayer and fasting program on social media and sharing of flyers to create awareness is wrong. The reason is because is contrary to the tenets of fasting as revealed in the New Covenant. Our Lord Jesus puts it better in Matthew 6:16-18, in it shows our fasting must reflect God’s values and ethics.
Why Broadcasting Fasting Is Wrong:
The practice of making your personal fast open to the public was at a point an acceptable practice. God disallowed and disapproved of the system where people fast and make it public in the Old Testament. However, He provided and prescribed a new pattern, which was what Christ enforced in Matthew 6:16-18. [Take out time to read 1 Kings 21:27-29; 2 Kings 6:30; Jonah 3:5-8; Isaiah 58:4; & Joel 2:13].
Jesus came to correct that notion of making your fast a show off. If you fast in the same way it was done under the Old Covenant; it means you’re fasting out of biblical context. Jesus tells us that whatever praise men give you becomes your reward and surely the best reward should come from God.
Some Biblical Facts about Fasting
Reading from Isaiah 58:1-7, we can establish the following biblical facts about fasting: Our fasting must reflect God’s values and ethics; which are desire motivated to:
- Liberate those who are oppressed [V6]
- Share our resources with the needy [V7]
- Provide shelter to the homeless [V7]
- Supply clothing to the naked [V7]
- Stop or refrain from accusing and condemning others [V9]
Fasting is fine and good. However, the unfortunate thing is that these days we don’t do it enough. We need to also know that to fast while harbouring destructive thoughts and oppressive attitudes doesn’t reflect goodness in any way.

Fast: This is the Stance Of The Holy Spirit
A time of fasting should remind us of our true nature of love. It should be a time to set up a pace in order to walk in and demonstrates the abundance of God’s love. The Spirit of God has poured God’s love in our hearts and we do not lack it. The time of fasting gives us the opportunity to shun all forms of ungodliness in our lives. Things like strife, destructive thoughts, oppressive attitude, hatred, anger, bitterness and every form of wickedness should be shun.
