Knowledge: How To Understand The Scripture (Episode 2)
“And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?”
In most cases is not that people are not learning or studying the scripture, they are and zealously doing that. The problem has been their inability to possess the withal to accept the truth whenever it comes their way.
So people are taught to hold strongly some knowledge that is not exact in nature. The regrettable thing is that the source of this knowledge is not the scripture. People are zealously learning but hardly do they come to the knowledge of the truth. This is because they have closed their hearts against the truth. And Apostle Paul warned of such people as he wrote to Timothy.
“Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.”
2 Timothy 3:7
One side effect of this character is that this category of people always resists the truth whenever it is taught. And not only that they resist it; they also prevent others who would like to accept it to do so. This is not unusual, because it has been the case even in the days of Moses. Apostle Paul told Timothy that
“Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.” (2 Timothy 3:8).
Apostle Paul Warns:
The good news Apostle Paul announced is that;
“But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as theirs also was.” (2 Timothy 3:9).
The above can be possible if only all well-meaning believers will join hands and work against scriptural misinterpretation. This kind of bold step will help to establish the truth in the church. It is important again to state that, going out for evangelism and bringing people to church is good.
However, is better to bring people and expose and establish them in the truth. This is the desire of God, that all men should be saved. And also as saved, they should come to the knowledge of the truth. Apostle Paul declared so to Timothy as he wrote him;
“For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.”
(1 Timothy 2:3-4)
The Knowledge Of The Truth:
Therefore, the knowledge of the truth becomes a paramount issue here. It implies that people are derailing because they lack the knowledge of the truth. So if there is an error it is because the one handling the word of truth decides knowingly and unknowingly to impart the wrong knowledge. Hence, the need to impart the right knowledge in the hearts of the believers should be a priority.
What makes a teaching to be erroneous is the absence of the knowledge of truth. Therefore, we should be looking at how we can communicate that which is the knowledge of the truth. This is very important because it is the crux of the matter and cannot be overlooked. The message of the scripture is expressed in a written form and not verbal.
Also we should accept the fact that these written words are a product of human languages. Therefore, no part of the Scripture is written in “heavenly” language though the thought behind them are heavenly or spiritual. However, it is also vital to accept that these languages are just a projection of human ideas or ideologies.
The Language Of The Scriptures:
This is because their development and making never came from heaven they are man’s invention. Studying the scriptures and having right understanding of what the scriptures are saying is very important. This can be achieved by studying the scripture in its original languages.
This factor is important because the errors are coming from lack of proper understanding of the root languages of the Scripture. The original manuscripts of the Scriptures are written in two major languages which are the Hebrew and Greek languages.
The original language of the Old Testament is Hebrew and the original language of the New Testament is Greek language. However, other translations like English language was sourced from Hebrew and Greek languages. In Nigeria, and other countries we have Scriptures translated from Hebrews and Greek to English. As a result of that what we have is Scripture written in English language.
However, during the time of translation of the Scripture from its original languages to English; the English language vocabulary has not fully developed. As events and inventions continue to emerge English language continues to grow in its vocabularies even till this present time. Therefore, many words in the original languages as at then couldn’t find a better expression in English language because of its limitation.
This is the reason many words in the original manuscript when translated losses their proper meaning in their usage. And hence their translated meaning somehow becomes obscured to comprehend or to make sense in the content and context. As a result of this in the English translated bible many words appear literally. And if one goes to the root words one discovers that these words have different interpretation and can be expressed differently.
Right Interpretation Of The Scripture:
However, to understand the English translated Scripture one has to read and study the content, context, pretest and posttest. It is by this method, one can ascertain for sure the meaning of the English words used by the translators. This implies that no word translated in English bible is literal in meaning. The way to ascertain their meaning is to apply the method above. For instance, to understand what is being said here, let’s see this verse in the Bible.
“And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.”
In the verse above, many have come to the conclusion that endurance can lead people to their salvation. This is because it says in the verse that ‘but he that endureth to the end shall be saved’. The word endureth and saved are two different English words. And these words can only be understood by their usage in the content and context of the book.

On this note, accepting the fact that endurance can lead one to salvation is an error. This is because doctrinally, endurance cannot bring someone to salvation. Hence, the meaning of the word ‘endureth in the verse is not what it appears to mean literally.
